UTTAR PRADESH AT A GLANCE

Uttar Pradesh in a Crisis

Uttar Pradesh (the largest state in India with a population of around 204.2 million by 2012) has amongst the lowest literacy rate in all of India at 69.72 % (2011 census).
During most of India’s post-independence period, economic growth in Uttar Pradesh (UP) has lagged behind other states. The gap between UP and the rest of India widened substantially during the 1990s, as the annual growth rate of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) slowed down to over two percentage points per year slower than for India as a whole.
Power shortages, low rates of capital formation and low productivity of existing irrigation systems and road networks, along with the under development of human capital were among the main causes of economic stagnation in UP, particularly in the agricultural sector.
